How do you feel about the word ‘stress’? It is a word which has become entwined in negativity suggesting feelings of anxiety and discomfort.
But both stress and fear could be seen as intelligent responses which have allowed the continued existence of man. Without this complex neuronal and hormonal communication, we would have been wiped out by predatory beasts many moons ago.
So why are we stressing out about stress? Have we become physically and emotionally intolerant to the stressors of life or has our 21st C environment developed at a faster pace than our own human ability to adapt?
Some would claim that the fight or flight response is designed to be triggered on way fewer occasions than we experience in our current lives. However, hunter gatherers, it could be argued, encountered daily acute stressors – roaming tigers, famine, intense exercise, low temperatures, rival tribes to name a few. The difference perhaps is our ability to switch off from the stress response. A hunter gatherer fighting a huge bear either wins or dies.
Job done. The stress hormone cascade kicks in then tapers off.
Is this our experience? How often have you felt emotionally charged and unable to unwind from a stressful incident? What are the environmental and physical causes of our 21st C stress intolerance?
These questions and more we will consider in this 2-hour webinar. We will then move on to discuss a stress driven REAL LIFE case study. A common case of a 20-something client who presents with a skin condition which has arisen since the onset of a particularly stressful period of his life.
HIVES. We discuss the mechanics behind how a consistent stress reaction is capable of manifesting in this itchy skin rash. Using a Genova Adrenal Stress Index (a saliva test measuring cortisol output at 4 points during the day) we are able to understand more fully how which daily stressors may be the most problematic. The test both drives our therapeutic plan and validates the suspicion that stress is a major driving factor. We will discuss dietary, lifestyle and supplement stress busting techniques which allow us to reach the root of the problem and offer some resolution from the discomfort of the symptoms.
This webinar is suitable for students of nutrition, newly qualified nutritionists with an interest in stress related conditions and the use of the saliva cortisol test and those with a keen interest in learning how stress intolerance may be triggering their own health issues.
